Calgary Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel delivered one of the greatest pre-game speeches in the history of the Grey Cup in 2008.
When he was asked if he’d recycle it next Sunday, Hufnagel quipped, “What speech is that?”
Stamps longsnapper Randy Chevrier can help his coach out. The veteran remembers it well.
“I just got goosebumps when you brought it up,” Chevrier said. “I don’t remember a lot from past games, but I’ll always remember him saying, ‘Men, we’ve got them right where we want them.’
“I would say it’s one of the great football speeches of all time.
“I want to go Youtube it right now, watch The Gladiator and go hit something, but I know I have to wait until Sunday.”
He’ll also have to wait for Sunday to hear Hufnagel’s 2012 Grey Cup speech.
Hufnagel said he didn’t spend weeks or even days coming up with the ’08 speech.
“It was that morning,” Hufnagel said. “I always try to formulate what I’m going to say to the team before we go out the morning of the game.
“I want to feed off what happened during the week so I know what to say.”
Hufnagel, who likely won’t choose to hit the motivational-speaker circuit after he’s done coaching, said he’s surprised his pep-talk is so popular with football fans.
“I thought it would send the right message to the team,” Hufnagel said.
“I’ve never seen it, nor will I ever watch it. I’m surprised (by its popularity), but I guess there’s a lot of bored people out there.”
Whatever he comes up with for Sunday’s sermon, it’ll be tough to come up with something better than the ’08 Hollywood-worthy gem.
And that’s fine with him.
“I’m not trying to,” Hufnagel added. “I just want to win football games.”
