The year of the running back couldn't change the CFL from a passing league into a rushing one.
Although Joffrey Reynolds led the loop with 1,504 yards rushing as a record seven running backs topped the 1,000-yard barrier, the most outstanding player award went to a quarterback.
Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo won his second straight MOP during the CFL Awards at the Telus Convention Centre last night, topping Reynolds with 44 of 55 votes.
"I guess the votes are in the eye of the beholder," Reynolds said.
"I felt I came out every game and gave my team every thing I had.
"It's not a perfect season but one I'm proud of. I'm looking to build on it. Hats off to Anthony. He had a great season and his team had a great season. They are playing for the Grey Cup. He's got the whole trifecta going there."
It was hardly surprising, although Reynolds had his finest CFL season by leading in yards from scrimmage (1,935) and finishing second in touchdowns (13).
Reynolds was the West Division's most outstanding player for the first time in his storied career, which now includes five straight 1,000-yard seasons.
It was the Tyler, Texas, native's 30th birthday yesterday and he is due to become a free agent Feb. 15, 2010.
Even Reynolds' top blocker was beaten out at the awards ceremony.
Stamps left tackle Ben Archibald lost the most outstanding lineman award to Alouettes right guard Scott Flory.
"You always want to win a competition like that and win an award, but you're up against some pretty stiff competition," Archibald said.
"There's great players in this league, so I can't pout about that at all."
