EDMONTON - There’s been no calls to start up a Free Willis fund just yet.

Maybe there’s not much need to.

When the CFL announced late Monday afternoon that Edmonton Eskimos defensive end Odell Willis had been fined for his hellacious hit on Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros, it seemed the message was more important than the crime.

First of all, the CFL pointed out that it determined Willis should have been flagged on the play.

Second of all, it seems the CFL viewed the infraction that concussed Collaros was not as serious as the maximimum fine imposed on Ottawa’s Jerrell Gavins.

“We have stressed to players and officials alike the importance of protecting the health and safety of our players in general, and the health and safety of quarterbacks in particular, as the game often puts them in exposed positions,” said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. “Creating a culture of player health and safety is paramount to the Canadian Football League.”
