Three years from now, Ricky Ray will be 37 years old, entering his 14th CFL season.

If he had remained the Edmonton Eskimos starting quarterback for his entire career, that might be about the time to start looking for his successor.

As it is, the Eskimos signed his successor to an extension Monday, likely in the range of a million dollars over the next three seasons, to go forward to the future.

“The reality is that to be successful in professional football you need to have a quarterback,” said GM Ed Hervey.

If that wasn’t self-evident to former GM Eric Tillman, it most certainly was to the guy who replaced him, with nobody resembling Ricky Ray in sight.

The smartest thing Hervey has done as GM was trade for Reilly with the B.C. Lions. Having him happily extended for the next three seasons ranks right up there, too.
