EDMONTON - Move over, Wayne Gretzky, There's a new No. 99 in town.

While the original orange and blue one continues to hang from the vaunted rafters of Rexall Place until it gets carefully moved to its new home downtown, there is a green and gold version that is currently active at Commonwealth Stadium.

“They just put me in the number. I guess they knew greatness when they seen it, man,” said new Edmonton Eskimos defensive end Willie Jefferson, who signed as a free agent on April 3.

“I’m just privileged to have the opportunity to wear it. I came to Edmonton to bring it my all, I don’t want them to think 99 is going to someone who doesn’t deserve it.

“I’m here to make 99 bigger than it already is.”

The six-foot-six, 245-pound native of Beaumont, Texas, didn’t even need to be filled in by his Eskimos teammates on the significance of his jersey.

“I knew exactly who Wayne Gretzky was,” said Jefferson, who wore No. 54 during six games with the Houston Texans last
