At 33 years old, T.J. Hill isn’t necessarily over the hill.

But the Edmonton Eskimos are done with the veteran linebacker, at least.

They released the import out of Northeastern on Tuesday, bringing an end to his five years in Edmonton, where he came in as a free agent in 2009.

The five-foot-nine, 195-pound native of Paterson, N.J., earned 389 tackles, 17 more on special teams, six quarterback sacks and 11 interceptions with the Green and Gold. But the coverage specialist saw the writing on the wall during a breakout year in 2013 by the team’s nominee for most outstanding rookie, Eric Samuels.

He and fellow import linebacker Donovan Richard are in line to challenge for the now-vacant starting role at the sam linebacker spot.

While no one in the organization was quoted in a press release announcing the roster move, the Eskimos twitter account included words from general manager Ed Hervey:
