EDMONTON - Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Matt Nichols has been knocked out for the season by a knee injury suffered in Friday's losing game against Saskatchewan.

The team announced Tuesday that Nichols suffered a torn right ACL during the 31-24 loss to the visiting Roughriders.

He will undergo surgery.

Nichols is slated to speak at a 1:45 p.m. MDT press conference.

He suffered the injury in the first quarter of Friday’s pre-season game. He was trying to stop Roughrider defensive back Carlos Thomas from getting into the end zone.

Nichols recently underwent off-season rehab after an ankle injury in last year’s playoff loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

Mike Reilly is now expected to inherit the starting job.
