Edmonton Eskimos QB Matt Nichols will be ready for camp in May

If you were to say Matt Nichols had a screw loose, you’d pretty much pin down the reason why the Edmonton Eskimos held a press conference at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday.

The quarterback spoke publicly for the first time since a pin was inserted into his left ankle, which was dislocated in the Eskimos’ last game — a 42-26 loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Division crossover on Nov. 11.

Put in to relieve starter Kerry Joseph as Edmonton trailed 31-7 heading into the second half, Nichols was sacked on his second possession by then-Argos defensive lineman Ronald Flemons.

As well as breaking his fibula, the takedown made all 25.792 in attendance at Rogers Centre cringe when the replay showed Nichols’s foot pointing at an impossible angle.

He still hasn’t watched it, but now with everything facing the right direction, Nichols said he will be ready for May 29, when rookies and quarterbacks report for training camp.
