Jason Armstead wasn’t exactly the saviour the Eskimos were looking for, but he didn’t fare any worse than their previous return men in his 2011 debut.

A bobbled punt return and dropped pass in the end zone pales in comparison to the touchdown he returned on the first punt he fielded with the Eskimos after joining the squad late last season.

But he is taking the steps towards helping improve the one area of the Eskimos game that has been consistently uninspiring so far this year.

“That’s one of those deals where you’ve got to have short-term memory for the most part,” Armstead said of the blunders. “You want to come out and try to solidify yourself. Last year, I kind of set the bar a little bit too high.”

Although the punt he fumbled was recovered by the Eskimos, it didn’t help his 4.7-yard average on six tries for 28 yards. But his four kick returns for 91 yards showed he’s still got it.

“I knocked a little rust off, for the most part,” Armstead said. “It started to get going in the second half. Hopefully we can move onto the next one. Hopefully I don’t have a pink slip in my locker tomorrow.

“For the most part, it was good to get back but I didn’t have the type of outing that I wanted.”

For the second season in a row, Armstead joins the Eskimos without the benefit of training camp, after being brought in to help a late push towards the playoffs.

“It’s like riding a bike. The one that got away from me, I tried to run to early,” Armstead said of the punt. “I kind of scanned the field and saw it and was just trying to run before I caught the ball.

“I fielded the ball pretty good, kind of getting a feel for the blocking scheme. Hopefully we can bounce back next week.”

The dropped touchdown pass may just be the only opportunity he gets to show he can make an impact on offence, as well.

“Individually, they wanted me to come in and try to help out,” he said.. “That’s what I wanted to do (Thursday). I wasn’t successful at that. We didn’t get the home run, and that’s the biggest deal.”
