Esks holster big guns for Friday
By GERRY MODDEJONGE, QMI Agency

EDMONTON - Friday’s preseason opener in Regina won’t be an accurate preview of the 2011 Edmonton Eskimos.

Coaches are taking precautions with injured players as well as marquee guys they don’t want to see injured before the season even starts.

“The guys that are a little nicked up, like Chris Bauman, won’t play,” head coach Kavis Reed said of the non-import receiver, who is nursing a groin injury. “Any guy that has any kind of injury that we feel could benefit from the time off, we’ll sit them down.

“Fred Stamps won’t play, and others that we decide after meeting. Some will travel but will not play.”

Such as Ricky Ray, for one.

Instead of bringing out the big guns and firing a warning shot to the league, the Eskimos are using Game 1 of the preseason as an audition for starting positions and roster spots.

“Besides Ricky Ray, everyone’s auditioning for a job,” said Reed. “Beyond that, we’re looking for those guys to fly around and execute a very simplified game plan.”
