EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos won’t let Ricky Ray get anywhere near the field in Regina on Friday.

Head coach Kavis Reed said Ray will not play against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the team’s first exhibition game of the season.

“I think it’s going to be standard around the league that you’re not going to play your starting quarterback in the first preseason game,” said Reed. “In the first preseason game, you expect some sloppiness, you expect some missed assignments, you expect some protection busts and we don’t want to expose Ricky to that.

“Until those guys get their timing back, get their protection schemes down, we don’t want to subject Ricky to some mental errors that may cost us our starting quarterback for the season.”

Matt Nichols and Kerry Joseph are expected to get the majority of the snaps against the Roughriders, while Eric Ward and Regina native Marc Mueller are also expected to see some action.

Camp Notes

Day 11

Who’s Hot

Linebacker Will Harris looked impressive going up against the offence and made a terrific interception in the corner of the end zone during the full-contact scrimmage.

Who’s Not

Matt Nichols struggled throwing the ball towards the end of practice and had a couple of passes picked off in the scrimmage.

Big Play

Rod Williams made an excellent read and stepped in front of a Matt Nichols pass, taking back to the end zone.

Let’s make a deal

The Eskimos made a trade on Wednesday, acquiring import offensive lineman Stefan Rodgers from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in exchange for future considerations. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Rodgers has spent time in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens. This would be his first CFL season.

In and out

OL Gordon Hinse (thumb), Centre Aaron Fiacconi (head), FB Samuel Fournier (shoulder), OL Greg Wojt (knee) and OL Scott Mitchell (knee) are all out injured.
