The Edmonton Eskimosí interest in Kavis Reed is now official.
The CFL team has asked and received permission to speak with the Bombers defensive co-ordinator about its vacant head coaching job, according to a league source.
Reed is viewed as the front-runner for the position, which became available when Richie Hall was fired last week. Eskimos GM Eric Tillman and Reed have a close relationship, going back to their days together with the Ottawa Renegades.
Reed also played defensive back for the Eskimos between 1995 and 2000.
Other candidates for the position include Cornell head coach Kent Austin, Calgary Stampeders quarterbacks coach Dave Dickenson and Buffalo Bills QB coach George Cortez.
This past season Reedís defence in Winnipeg allowed the second-fewest yards (344.6 per game) but gave up the sixth-most points (26.9 per contest).
