EDMONTON -- Esks fans appear torn about whether head coach Richie Hall should be sacked or given another chance.

"My first reaction was, 'Huh! Why?' said Edmontonian Sandi Tipper, 37, an avid football fan.

"Personally, I don't think it's a good move for the Eskimos to let Hall go.

"The way I see it, we will be back to where we were a year and a half ago."

Speculation is that Hall will be fired from his head coach position Friday -- and may be offered the position of defensive co-ordinator in weeks to follow.

It's no secret that Tillman, the Eskimos' general manager since September, and Hall have a complicated history.

Tillman -- former general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders -- passed up Hall twice for head coaching jobs in Saskatchewan, leaving some Edmonton fans wondering if history is playing into the rumoured sacking.

"I wonder if this is more of a political move with (Eric) Tillman in charge," said sports fan Jordan Beatty.

"(But) I've been an Eskimo fan my whole life and this was an abysmal season.

"I have no love or dislike (for Hall), but frankly I'm surpr is e d this didn't happen sooner."

Tillman was hired to replace former GM Danny Maciocia, who was fired in July. Hopes were for Tillman to turn around the team, which at the time had a 2-8 record.

The Esks finished this season with a 7-11 record, making them the last CFL team in the West Division.

Regardless, season-ticket holder Murray Badger hopes the loss of Hall is nothing more than talk.

"I hope it doesn't happen. I think he's a good coach," said Badger.

"They were just on the cusp and were really close to winning so many games. I think one more year and they would have had it."
