Eric Tillman, as projected in Tuesday’s Edmonton Sun, is within the negotation and signing of a contract to be the new general manager of the Edmonton Eskimos.

The headline “Nervous Nine Time. Tillman suddenly top candidate for GM job” almost certainly can be changed to “only candidate.”

A source told the Sun last night that the Eskimos have come to the conclusion they are not going to find a better candidate in the off-season than they can sign now and as pointed out in the column Tuesday,

Tillman is clearly the best candidate available right now.

That’s a complete turnaround from the way the community-owned organization appeared to be looking at it when Danny Maciocia was fired.

Tillman was forced to resign as GM of the community-owned Saskatchewan Roughriders after being given an absolute discharge without criminal record after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting his children’s teenaged babysitter.

If you are willing to give Tillman a clean slate and a second chance in life, and ignore the baggage he might bring in the community, there is little question that he’s the best football person available to turn this team around in the shortest period of time as he did taking over from Roy Shivers and winning the Grey Cup with Saskatchewan in 2008.
