Canning Edmonton Eskimo GM Danny Maciocia was the right move, judging by fan reactions.
In an Edmonton Sun online poll published Sunday, 90% of voters cheered the firing.
Meanwhile, the Esks' official Facebook page was smattered with dozens of comments of support, relief and even frustration Maciocia lasted as long as he did.
"YAY ... YAY ... YAY ... and again ... YAY!!!!!" wrote Gayle McCarthy.
Vincent Lee was a bit more verbose.
"I hate to see anyone fired but Danny M is an exception to the rule. He's a good man but it's a good decision to oust him. We need the change and it's not going to happen overnight for sure. But the season is almost one-third of the way through, so there's still room to salvage a 1-4 start," he posted. "I'm glad this soap opera has finally ended. More drama to come for a new GM."
Some turned to speculating about new GM candidates. CFL director of officiating Tom Higgins and former Saskatchewan Roughrider GM Eric Tillman were two names mentioned.
At least one fan was skeptical of a change.
"Why do I have a feeling that this whole firing of Danny is (Eskimo president) Rick Lelacheur's way of covering his ass. A little self-preservation and the appearance that I am taking action go a long way in securing your own continued employment. Yes Danny made some strange personnel decisions like cutting guys and then bringing them back," Terry Sherwood wrote. "He became the 'face to dislike" and blame it all on. With Danny gone, will it really make a difference on the field? I would say no at this point."
