EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos have the best group of Canadian receivers Richie Hall has ever seen at a training camp.

The problem now is that the head coach and his assistants will have to decide who stays and who has to go.

“Very seldom do you have five veterans competing,” Hall said of returning receivers Kamau Peterson, Andrew Nowacki and Kevin Challenger, who are joined by off-season acquisitions Andre Talbot and Brad Smith, from the Toronto Argonauts. “I think that’s a pretty good, solid group and I’m very happy with the depth.

“The reality for us coaches is how do you keep as many as you can.”

It’s a decision they will make following Sunday’s game in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions.

IN THE RUNNING: The Eskimos will get a good look at import running back Daniel Libre, who will see a good share of playing time despite only arriving on Tuesday.

But he has looked impressive so far in practices.

“I think (he has) the athletic ability as far as quickness, being able to stop on a dime, change your directions,” Hall said of the five-foot-eight, 185-pound Hawaii product. “When you look at most small backs that come up here, that’s their attributes, that’s what they do.

“(John) Avery was here, he was built for the CFL with that shiftiness, that ability to make people miss in space. Because of (Libre’s) stockiness and his physical makeup, I think he can be a force running in between the tackles.”

GAME TIME: The Eskimos will look to get their starters more game time this week.

“You kind of go in thinking that you’re going to play at least a half because they have to get game ready,” Hall said. “You don’t want to play them the whole game because you’re still evaluating and want to look at other guys.”

CLOSE UP: CFL quarterbacks might have headsets in their helmets during games this year, but Eskimos running back Calvin McCarty took a helmet camera for a spin Thursday at Clarke Park, getting point-of-view footage for CTV.
