EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos did a little preseason roster math on Saturday, releasing eight players who attended a three-day rookie camp, and signing two new bodies.
Import defensive back Chijioke Onyenegecha, out of Oklahoma, had originally signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in March 2007 before going on to make 15 tackles, a tackle for a loss, a sack and a pass knockdown in nine game.
At six-foot-five and 300 pounds, import offensive tackle Jabari Ferguson spent last season with the Indoor Football League’s Albany Outlaws.
Former Eskimos defensive back Sammy Okpro was released from the team for the second preseason in a row, along with receiver Ernie Pierce, defensive backs Gary Albury and Isaiah Gardner, defensive end Kenyon Brown, running back Dennis Kennedy and offensive linemen Clifford Louis and Alex Lau.
JUST IN TIME: Former Green Bay Packers defensive end Kenneth Pettway participated in team medicals at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday. Although he was eligible to attend last week’s rookie camp, the five-year NFL veteran will make his first on-field appearance when main camp opens Sunday at Clarke Park.
FOR THE FANS: Eskimos Fan Day runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Clarke Park, which will be held in conjunction with the team’s opening day of training camp.
Appearances will be made by the Eskimos pep band and cheer team, while merchandise and tickets will be available for the upcoming season.
Free food and refreshments will be on hand and donations will be collected by the Michael Cuccione Foundation in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
Fans are invited to sign the enormous 13th Eskimo banner before getting the chance to get signatures from their favourite players at the conclusion of practice.
