EDMONTON - EDMONTON - Preseason is underway for the Edmonton Eskimos quarterbacks.

While main camp is still a little better than a week away, set to begin June 6, the group will have its work cut out against a revamped secondary.

Over the off-season, the organization brought in veterans Lawrence ‘Flash’ Gordon, Chris Thompson and Lenny Walls.

They will join highly-touted rookie prospect Saleem Borhot and Willie Amos — who sat out last year due to injury after being traded from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — along with returning starters Randee Drew, Jason Goss and T.J. Hill.

But that’s only part of the pivots’ challenge.

“Different guys and obviously Richie (Hall) is going to be calling it,” Jason Maas said of his head coach’s added assignment as defensive co-ordinator this season. “It’ll be more back to the days where Ricky (Ray) and I were used to going against Saskatchewan’s defence.”

A defensive co-ordinator with the Roughriders for eight years before joining the Eskimos as a rookie head coach last year, Hall is taking over the defensive duties left in Jim Daley’s absence.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Maas said. “It’s a great challenge going against Richie’s defence. If he has those guys playing like he did in Saskatchewan it’s going to be very difficult for our offence to do anything in camp.”

FOURTH WHEEL ...

The Eskimos invited free-agent Floyd Haigler to join their stable of quarterbacks, who reported for duty on Friday.

The Howard State product had a breakout season with the Bison in 2008 with 2,290 yards, 17 touchdowns and a 110.0 QB rating. His senior year saw that number fall to the low ’80s, but Eskimos director of player personnel Paul Jones liked enough of what he saw to give the South Carolina native.

“It’s cold,” Haigler said of his first impressions of Edmonton.

He will turn 23 on Tuesday, sharing his birthday with soon-to-be 26-year-old Adam Braidwood from the Eskimos defensive line.
