EDMONTON - After all the effort he put into getting drafted, the real work is just beginning for Leduc’s Corbin Sharun.

The Edmonton Wildcats safety was taken by his hometown team as the Eskimos wrapped up their participation in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft with the 43rd overall selection in the sixth round.

“I honestly couldn’t think anymore, I was more pacing around the basement than anything,” said Sharun, who followed the draft online after watching the first two rounds on TSN.

“I was just watching TV and trying to forget about it but I couldn’t because I kept on hitting refresh on my computer to see what happened.”

Sharun, who missed an opportunity to work out for the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday because of a spring snowstorm down south, hit the pavement to get his film out to teams after missing out on a chance to show his stuff at the CFL evaluation camp in March.

The five-foot-11, 215-pound former St. Francis Xavier quarterback impressed coaches during last weekend’s Eskimos open tryouts enough and has earned an invitation to training camp where he will battle for a roster spot at Will linebacker, with an emphasis on pass coverage.

“Corbin’s always been interesting. Any time a guy can press 225 (pounds) 25 times, has played the quarterback position, lines up at free safety, he’s been timed at 4.7 (second 40-yard sprint), that means he’s trucking pretty good downfield,” said Eskimos GM Danny Maciocia.

“Our coaches were impressed with him. He is a local kid, but we picked him as a football player.”

In the final selection of the televised portion of the draft, Sharun watched North Dakota Fighting Sioux linebacker Curtis Dublanko get taken 15th overall by the Montreal Alouettes.

“I was so happy for Curtis,” said Sharun, who played with Dublanko while growing up in Leduc. “He’s my best friend, I couldn’t wish for anything better than that. He deserves it.”
