Hall, Hufnagel's memory test

CALGARY -- They're facing each other in the playoffs for the first time as head coaches, but it wasn't so long ago they took to the field as players -- for one of them, anyway.

Edmonton Eskimos sideline sergeant Richie Hall and Calgary Stampeders bench boss John Hufnagel will be on opposing sides of the field in today's West Division semifinal.

Back in their playing days, they lined up on opposite sides of the line of scrimmage as a defensive back and quarterback, respectively.

But Hufnagel's memory is a little fuzzy when it comes to ever playing against Hall.

"I might have," the Calgary coach offered. "But I know Richie, I just don't remember any game that I might have thrown him three interceptions."

Hall remembers things a little more clearly, and unfortunately for him, there were no such memorable occurrences.

In fact, Hall can't remember getting any picks complements of Hufnagel.

"That was so far long back, I don't think so," Hall said. "I remember coach Hufnagel when he was drafted by the Denver Broncos out of Penn State. I was a big fan of his because he was a scrambling quarterback.

"I remember playing against him, especially when he was with Winnipeg - fond memories. As a matter of fact, when I played here in Calgary, we used to work out at the same health club so we used to have a bit of a dialogue. Now we're coaching against each other."

Hall couldn't recall any time he got beat deep by Hufnagel.

"Their team lit us up," Hall said.

"There were some pretty good Blue Bombers teams out there. Tommy Clements was out there also, so they had a pretty good one-two combination."

And Hufnagel's done pretty well so far as a head coach, winning a Grey Cup as a rookie last year. Although Hall is looking to follow in Hufnagel's footsteps in his own inaugural season as a CFL head coach, he said the two have spent past seasons as assistant coaches on opposing teams.

"I think we have -- in a long-short way -- a long history as far as whether it's competing on the field, him and I, or against him in the box," said Hall, tuned out to not be too crushed to learn Hufnagel didn't remember his prowess as a player.

As for coaching memories, today's game could be tough to forget.
