Esks shake up coaching staff

There’s nothing like a change in offensive co-ordinators to shake things up after a tough 32-8 Labour Day loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

But the Edmonton Eskimos aren’t looking behind them at past scores or past personnel as they prepare for Friday’s rematch.

Kevin Strasser has replaced Rick Worman as offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach, and that’s just the way it is for veteran slotback Kamau Peterson.

“In an organization like this, you’ve got confidence they’re going to do the best thing for you,” he said. “You just kind of roll with the punches and Coach Strasser has already shown how capable he is. I’ve been around the league and seen his offence. I know we’re in capable hands. We’re excited to get going.”

Peterson said no one is expecting a new offensive system to be introduced at this point in the season, but said Strasser’s background as a receivers coach puts them on the same page.

“What you’ll have mostly is probably a difference in philosophy where he’s going to attack more and maybe structure a little bit differently,” said Peterson. “I don’t know that there’s a good time to have that happen, but if anything I applaud the organization for not waiting if that’s what they felt.

"There are no games to waste in this situation, in this league, as tight as the West is going to be.”

Getting on with the business at hand is what centre Aaron Fiacconi prefers to focus on.

“It’s a business. Everyone of us in here is aware that you’re here on a week-by-week basis, you have to perform, you have to do well. You’re rewarded for it by keeping your job for another week,” he said. “We’re starting to do some great things on offence. Coach Worman’s a great coach, I know he will land on his feet somewhere.

“Management was confident we could overcome any adversity like this. We’re all confident. Our goal here for the offensive line is to win a Grey Cup no matter who’s coaching us.”
