Four rookies axed while veterans cleared

The Edmonton Eskimos cut four rookie defensive players yesterday in preparation for main camp to begin today.

"We have to get down to our numbers," said Eskimos head coach Richie Hall, who is only allowed to have 68 players --along with a handful of draft picks and juniors -- on the roster once training camp gets underway.

Brandent Englemon, Darnell Terrell, Tyler Everett and Rory Johnson were released.

"They did a solid job for us, but we felt that the other guys adapted a little bit quicker and performed at a little bit higher level consistently," said Hall. "I know we're at the numbers that we need to be at for training camp.

"We knew coming into the rookie camp that we were going to have to make some decisions and the players were very much aware that they were still being evaluated."

On the bright side, all the veterans who reported for player medicals yesterday morning were given passing grades, Hall said.

"Our medicals went very well. Yeah, there's going to be some nooks and crannies. Not 100% health but to perform and to be out on the football field, we're expecting everyone to be out there," he said.

"Guys came in in good shape as far as the testing that they received and I'm looking forward to getting them out on the football field."
