Rick Campbell has entered the coaching derby.

The Edmonton Eskimos defensive co-ordinator has made it known he wants to be considered for Danny Maciocia's old job as head coach of the Green and Gold.

APPLYING HIMSELF

"I am going to apply (for the head coach job with the Esks)," said Campbell yesterday.

An assistant coach with the club for 10 years, Campbell is watching his words carefully and refuses to sell himself through the media.

"I hope and trust they hire the best person for the Eskimos," remarked Campbell.

"We owe it to the players and the city to have the best chance to win."

Campbell and general manager Danny Maciocia have had recent discussions.

This makes it nine candidates in the running to be the Green and Gold's next bench boss.

Hugh Campbell's only son, Rick is very respected by his players. While there were seven new starters on defence this year, Edmonton gave up 372 yards on average per game (fourth in CFL) and an average of 26.2 points per contest (sixth in league).

A year-round Edmonton resident, Campbell is a product of Harry Ainlay high school.

QUICK HIT:

Richie Hall gets his turn to impress the Edmonton Eskimos tomorrow.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive co-ordinator will have an interview tomorrow for the vacant head coaching position with the Esks.

Examining film of the Green and Gold yesterday, Hall is sure to be ready.
