Decisions, decisions

It may be a case of a chemistry experiment gone wrong.

In its two previous wins, the Esks coaching staff decided to go with their top four pass rushers along the defensive line. As a result, there was plenty of heat on the quarterback and a couple of 'W's.

A couple of changes and, poof, the magic was gone. An injury to Dario Romero affected the unit's effectiveness.

"We've got to be better," said head coach Danny Maciocia. "You can't go out there and give up 33 first downs."

The team had to find a way to get Fred Perry in the lineup, but making Jim Davis a healthy scratch in favour of Joe Anoia may have backfired. Romero and Davis were tied for the team lead with six sacks each heading into the game. With both players out, it was no surprise Lion's QB Buck Pierce has plenty of time to do the damage.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES

Maciocia has an embarrassment of riches along his defensive line, but the CFL holds out its unique challenges. Canadian Adam Braidwood's inability to get back into the lineup has been a ratio-buster and Maciocia sounded less than thrilled about the situation.

"I would (activate him), but I don't know if he can give us 30, 40 50 snaps a game," said Maciocia. "There's going to be some changes, but I don't anticipate that being one of them."

It now appears Romero will be back in the lineup. And with Jordan Younger sitting out yesterday's workout, Maciocia may be working on a way to get Davis back in the rotation.

"Jim's good to go," said Maciocia. "If he practises well, he'll be on the roster."

Maciocia gave mixed reviews on Perry's first start in three months.

"Typical first game back, where you're just trying to get going again. He had some good snaps, he had some so-so snaps," said Maciocia, who now has some interesting decisions to make.

"I'd probably relish that situation rather than saying you only have four. They've got to play hard every week because there's other people around here willing to take their jobs if they don't."
