EDMONTON -- Shannon Garrett has issued words that haven't been heard in the Edmonton Eskimos locker-room in three years.

"I feel we are the best team in the CFL," said Garrett, the veteran linebacker in the Esks' young defence.

"We are just trying to fight for that first-place playoff spot to get home-field advantage.

"Our main goal is to finish first in the West (Division), then win at home and go to the Grey Cup."

After missing the playoffs for two straight years, those are uncommon words in Eskimoland.

At 6-3, the Esks would be in a first-place tie with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West with a win tonight vs. the Calgary Stampeders at Commonwealth Stadium.

But for that to happen, the Green and Gold would have to break their own trend of winning two games in a row then losing another.

For the third time this season, the Esks are staring at an opportunity to win three straight games.

In their previous two attempts this year, the club has dropped the ball.

"We can't afford to lose a step. We are gaining ground, gaining momentum," said Esks receiver Kamau Peterson.
