A.J. Gass couldn't turn his back on a third attack.
While fans across the nation have surely seen Gass's Saturday night meltdown on countless TV highlight shows - throwing John Comiskey's helmet 35 yards in frustration - the Edmonton Eskimo middle linebacker claims there was plenty of ugly activity before he finally snapped.
"In all honesty, I walked away from two prior incidents - seconds prior," said Gass on the melee with the Calgary Stampeders that led to him being ejected.
"(Jeff) Pilon grabbed my balls and was squeezing my balls out of control - it got me to jump up off the ground.
"As I am walking away, that is when he hit me in the back.
"I walked away from that. That is when Comiskey came and mixed it up. The third time was the charm."
Gass will surely be fined by the CFL for his role in the scrap.
The 10-year veteran actually apologized to his teammates yesterday.
"I asked to meet with the players by themselves and explained my regret and apologies," said Gass.
