Return game still ugly

REGINA -- What will the Edmonton Eskimos do with their return game now?

After sitting Tony Tompkins in favour of Tyler Ebell yesterday, the Esks watched in horror as Ebell botched his first ever CFL regular-season punt return. By failing to pick up the ball and letting Saskatchewan punter Jamie Boreham get it, the Riders retained possession and scored a touchdown on the following drive.

Ebell also had adventures with the ball on returns.

He dropped the opening kickoff before quickly scrambling to recover it. On his second kickoff return, Ebell watched the ball bounce off one of his feet.

Later in the game, the rookie had the ball bounce off one of his hands and out of bounds in the end zone.

Ebell took full blame for the Boreham recovery. But he denies he was nervous while failing to cleanly field any of his first three return attempts yesterday at Mosaic Stadium.

"It was windy," he said.

"But I can't make any excuse. I should have still caught the ball. I just didn't do well, I guess."

Ebell did show some promise when he did clearly field the ball, running hard with no hesitation.

But when asked if he should get another crack at returning kicks/punts on Saturday against Calgary, he replied: "I felt when I fielded it I did good. But all-around, I will have to watch the film. It is not up to me."
