Esks send Williams packing

Roosevelt Williams' short stay with the Edmonton Eskimos is over.

The Sun has learned the Esks have released the defensive back, who played less than a season in the CFL.

The 28-year-old import cornerback is likely a casualty of head coach Danny Maciocia's aggressive off-season hunt for veteran secondary help.

With the acquisitions of Omarr Morgan, Jason Goss and Stanford Samuels, there is little room in the defensive backfield.

Add to the mix promising sophomore Jonte Buhl and respected veteran Shannon Garrett -who will be coming to training camp - and it's clear that Williams would have been hard pressed to find a spot.

While Williams also suffered a torn rotator cuff late last year in a game against Saskatchewan, there is no indication that injury played a role in his release.

The former third-round NFL draft pick could receive another training camp offer south of the border.
