No offence taken

Danny Maciocia says he's not taking for granted Hugh Campbell's guarantee that he'll be back as head coach next year.

But the beleaguered head coach of the 4-9 defending Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos suggested he's not against a drastically reduced number of responsibilities, including no longer remaining offensive co-ordinator next year if he is back.

Having Maciocia drop the job of offensive co-ordinator, the Sun has learned, is part of Rick LeLacheur and Campbell deciding that Maciocia doesn't deserve to be fired after this season because of all the elements out of his control.

"A lot of things go through your mind right now. A lot of things have to be changed next year,'' said Maciocia, who now has a 15-15 regular season record as a head coach.

"It's hard to talk about it right now. We have five weeks left to go. But no matter how it turns out, there are a lot of things as an organization that we need to sit down and deal with.''

Maciocia said he has his option year remaining on a three-year contract.

"I have another year, but that doesn't mean anything.''

Suggestions that he might end up leaving the Eskimos to go to the Montreal Alouettes to replace Don Matthews should he be fired are not in his head, he said.

"This is where I want to be.''

Maciocia said he keeps being told "to do your job and not to worry.''

He said he's probably not the first coach to be told that and end up realizing he should have worried. "All the time I've been here, they've sat down at the end of the year and analyzed everything. That's what I expect to be done again this year.''

Meanwhile the head coach, who promised his players there would be Eskimos who might have their own job-security issues if they didn't show up for Friday's 20-18 defeat to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, spent yesterday in the office with his coaches looking at film to see who showed up and who didn't.

"We came back to work and evaluated every single player and how they did in terms of getting it done.

"Some played the way you want them to play and the way some others played, it's a wonder they found their way to Commonwealth Stadium.''
