Esks meet Cats without Bertrand

The Edmonton Eskimos will have to play without starting fullback Mathieu Bertrand on Saturday night in Hamilton.

"I am not going to play for sure," he said yesterday.

But there might be a silver lining to go along with the fact Bertrand will be on the sidelines for a second straight game: his shoulder injury might not be nearly as bad as originally projected.

After Terrence Patrick ran over Bertrand on the opening kickoff on Labour Day in Calgary, the Laval product was told he would be out of action four to six weeks.

"But now maybe I'll be able to play in the next home game," he explained yesterday.

The Esks return home to battle the Tiger-Cats to finish a back-to-back series on Sept. 22.

While X-rays showed there wasn't a broken bone in Bertrand's left shoulder, he sprained a joint near his collarbone.
