Sanchez still sore at Esks

Davis Sanchez is moving on with his football career, but he hasn't let go of the past. Although it has been five months since the defending Grey Cup champions traded him to the Montreal Alouettes, Sanchez is still noticeably bothered by the Eskimos' decision.

"I signed a long contract (with Edmonton) thinking I would be there for a long time," said the defensive back on the phone from Montreal.

"I bought a house and planned on planting roots there."

In advance of Friday's match-up between the struggling Eskimos and the undefeated Alouettes, Sanchez was more animated with the Montreal media earlier this week.

"I did everything (Edmonton) asked ... I did it for the betterment of the team and, in the end, it backfired. I did things they asked me to do, even though it wasn't good personally," he told a Montreal paper.

When asked to expand on that comment yesterday, he refused.

Aware of Sanchez's feelings, Eskimo head coach Danny Maciocia says it's unfortunate.

"We had an opportunity to acquire a couple of players (Reggie Durden and Robert Brown) and we had to give something up," he said.

"They wanted Davis Sanchez to get the deal done."

The rumour mill has suggested that Sanchez was dealt for having a bad attitude and for financial reasons. He apparently signed a three-year plus an option deal with the Esks for roughly $840,000.

SHORT HIT: Now that he's through the heat of the firestorm that erupted over the last-second loss to Winnipeg, Maciocia admits he's handling adversity better because of lessons he learned during bouts of criticism last year.

"Don't get overly charged up and try to keep things under control," he said of his lessons.

But even though fans have been calling for him to be fired, he's not getting bitter on the town.

"I love it (here)," he said.

"If you want to be on the front page, there are certain things that come with that. And it's called expectations."

FINISH LINES: Mookie Mitchell and A.J. Gass still appear set to be added to the roster.
