Shuffling the deck for Lions game

Danny Maciocia has definitely shuffled the deck this week - and he's not done.

The Edmonton Eskimo head coach made six changes to his 46-man roster yesterday, but still has at least one, if not a few decisions to make before he declares his 42-man roster for tomorrow's game against the B.C. Lions.

As expected, import linebacker A.J. Gass has been moved to the one-game injured list with a strained hamstring.

The move allows import Joe Montford to easily get on the roster and start on the defensive line.

Import linebacker Antico Dalton (hamstring) and non-import running back Dahrran Diedrick (undisclosed injury) have also been moved to the one-game injured list.

Those two moves allow newly acquired Mike Botterill and veteran Deitan Dubuc to be activated to the 46-man list.

It marks the first time in the regular-season that Dubuc is in a position to play after being stashed on injured reserve.

"If we chose to use him as an extra fullback or as a player on teams, we can do so (now)," said Maciocia.

By already confirming Montford will play, yesterday's moves mean Maciocia currently has one open non-import spot on the 42-man roster of players who actually dress.

But it's entirely possible that Dubuc and Botterill will both play, meaning another Canadian will have to come off.

Dubuc has been part of the first-string punt team this week and Botterill moved to the first-string kickoff team yesterday.

Maciocia has to declare his final playing roster by 6 p.m. tomorrow.

SHORT HITS: Mookie Mitchell's status for tomorrow still isn't finalized.

The veteran slotback, who strained his right hamstring in Winnipeg, took a couple of reps with the first-team offence yesterday in practice, but hasn't turned loose his legs on the field once this week.

"We are going to keep it to one of those game-time decisions," said Maciocia.

"He has got another couple of days and we just want to be smart about it."

And that is the key because if Mitchell pulls his hamstring Friday, he could be in limbo for a few weeks.

If Mitchell can't play, import receiver Trevor Gaylor is on the 46-man roster and can be activated.
