The hits and misses

THE HITS

JARRED WINKEL (RB): After some shaky outings this week, the U of A product looked good yesterday, particularly on the opening play of scrimmage action. Winkel cut outside, bolted past the defender and scampered down the sideline to the end zone.

J.R. LAROSE (DB): Showed he's in the hunt for a full-time spot on the roster. The Huskies grad made a nice diving knockdown and then followed that up by batting down a long bomb intended for Chris Cole.

AND MISSES

QUARTERBACKS: It's not easy holding cold and wet pigskin so give the quartet of passers a break. None of them had a particularly strong day but that was expected due to the conditions.

DWAYNE MORGAN (OL): The 300-pound tackle, formerly with Atlanta and Washington in the NFL, was a camp casualty after the team received an unfavourable result from an MRI on his leg.

NOTES

Rodney Williams showed off his punting power yesterday despite the poor conditions. His first boot from the goal line travelled past the centre stripe.

HURT PARADE

FB Mike Maurer (sprained foot) and RB Mike Bradley (ACL strain) returned to action yesterday but FB Mathieu Bertrand (groin), DT Randy Spencer (calf strain), WR Chris Collins (hamstring), DB Jason Nugent (knee) and KR/SB Tony Tompkins (calf strain) were limited to stretches and sprints on the side.

AT CLARKE PARK TODAY: Practice - 9-11 a.m.
