Hair today ...

Mike Maurer was itching to take the clippers to his head for a while but never got around to it.

The 29-year-old Edmonton Eskimos fullback finally hauled out the shears prior to yesterday's pre-game walk-through.

When he finished, the former Ottawa Renegade was sporting a Mohawk and looking like and extra from the latest incarnation of The Longest Yard.

"I planned on coming into training camp with (the Mohawk) but just got busy and didn't do it," smiled Maurer, who spent three seasons in an Ottawa uniform before signing with the Esks in February. "I figured I'd just save it to the first week of the season."

Maurer is a huge fan of the X-Men character Wolverine and been sporting mutton chops the past two years in an effort to appear more like his superhero idol.

The self-inflicted coif, meanwhile, is a one of a kind 'do in the Esks locker-room. Ultimately, that's what the eight-year CFL veteran was aiming to achieve when he put shears to scalp.

"It's only hair," Maurer offered. "I'm always looking to do something a little bit different."
