FIRST DOWN

The jury is still out on whether QB Jason Maas will see the field during Friday's pre-season tilt versus Winnipeg. Maas underwent off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum and has been on throw count throughout camp. "We'll see where we're at and what his (throw) count is and take if from there," offered head coach Danny Maciocia. "We'll figure out how much he plays, if he plays at all." As to whether it'll be Ricky Ray, Khari Jones or Jason Johnson behind centre out of the gate, Maciocia was non-committal. "Anyone of those three could start and it would be no big deal to me," he said ... There were more than a few sore heads on the field practice yesterday. WR Trevor Gaylor was among those players under the weather following Saturday's rookie night festivities. "I've had rookie night before but this one was one for the ages," said Gaylor, a Miami (Ohio) product.

SECOND DOWN

Veteran SB Derrell Mitchell returned to Texas following the death of his sister. Mitchell was on the practice field yesterday when he received the news ... Following punter Anthony Posteraro's release SB Robert Leblanc and OL Tim O'Neill are the only Esk picks from this year's Canadian college draft in camp ... DL Steve Charbonneau and his wife, speed skater Isabelle Charest, are expecting their first child ... Tony Tompkins, Reggie White and Ron McLendon are auditioning as kickoff return men. One of the three will be deployed alongside Mike Bradley this season ... An estimated 1,500 were on hand for the Esks annual Fan Day, which featured an autograph session at the conclusion of yesterday's workout.

PARING DOWN
