Jeanty faces anxious wait

Rashad Jeanty gives Robert Bulmer blocking tips during the Esks' high- school practice Monday. It sounds like a rather dull weekend, watching TV and waiting for the phone to ring.

But for Rashad Jeanty, that could well be the beginning of the most exciting time of his football career.

The 22-year-old Edmonton Eskimos defensive end is eligible for the NFL draft and has a shot at being selected during tomorrow's second-stage selections over the final four rounds. Jeanty will be watching today's first-round coverage on the tube and then hoping for a call.

"I can't really expect anything so I'll have to wait and see what's going to happen," said Jeanty, who had 49 tackles and five sacks for the Esks last season.

He's heard from a handful of teams including San Francisco, Houston, Philadelphia and the New York Giants, all of whom have inquired as to where they might be able to reach the six-foot-three, 230-pounder if need be. "Everyone's pretty much said the same thing. They want to know where they can contact me if they make the move to get me," said Jeanty, third team Freshman All-American back in 2001 at the University of Central Florida.

If an NFL club makes the decision to snatch up the Miami native with a late-round pick, that will leave Jeanty with a decision of his own. Does he take the chance on bolting to the NFL - provided the Esks are paid out for his contract - or does he stay in Edmonton?

"I'm not going to rush into anything," he said. "I'll do whatever is the best thing for me and my family."

The Eskimos would have to be compensated for the final year of Jeanty's contract if he is snatched up by an NFL club.

"I foresee he'll be here. I think his intent would be to play out his contract here and then go," said Esks head coach Danny Maciocia.

"He's a little undersized to be a lineman down there but he's got such great abilities on special teams, I think a team would look for him in that spot first and then find a spot for him on defence."
