Former Edmonton Eskimo Byron Capers says he's getting his treasured 2003 Grey Cup ring back, even though it was listed as sold on EBay yesterday. "It's already been taken care of, that's all I'm able to say," said Capers yesterday from Regina. "It's in the air right now. I'm trying to get it back.

"It's going to come full circle and everyone who wrote about it is going to regret their writings. It was a big mistake that went down but it happens. That's all I'm allowed to say and I'll have it back in my collection."

The 10-Kt.-diamond-studded ring ended up EBay, the Internet auction site, on Feb. 13. Valued at $10,000 US, a bidder yesterday picked it up for $5,100 US.

Capers said he turned the ring over to an Ottawa pawn shop last November for $600.

"People were making it seem like I sold my ring," Capers said. "Why would I sell my ring for $600 when I could get more for it?"

The speedy footballer splits his time between homes in Canada and the United States and said he left it at the pawn shop to ensure he didn't lose it.

He insists he was frustrated in his attempts to buy the ring back from the shop prior to its Internet sale. The pawn shop owner denied he'd ignored repeated messages from Capers to return the ring.

As a freshman, Capers won a national championship at Florida State in 1993. He owns a championship ring from that era. But he said he cherishes his Grey Cup ring.

"This one means a lot," he said. "You never know, it might be the last ... A ring has a meaning. It's an experience to be on a team that won.

"There's people in this game who never get a chance to go (to a championship game)."

The 30-year-old Capers never played a down with the Eskimos. He was on the team's practice roster after he was picked up near the end of the 2003 season.

Nevertheless, the Eskimos voted to give each player on the roster that year a Cup ring after they beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-22. The Esks released Capers in May 2004.
