Simmons outta here

There's one less new face occupying the temporary locker they wheeled into the Edmonton Eskimos locker room last week. Citing personal reasons, veteran receiver Tony Simmons cleaned out his locker and headed home to Chicago yesterday.

As a result, the five-year NFL veteran has been placed on the Esks suspended list for the second time this season.

Simmons signed with the Green and Gold in February but failed to turn up at training camp and was suspended at that time.

"He still had some personal challenges and he needed to get those taken care of," said Esks head coach Tom Higgins.

"He didn't leave in the middle of the night without letting us know. We talked it through with him and agreed that was the best thing to do.

"It's not like the last time we're going to see him. He now knows at least a little bit more of what the Edmonton Eskimos are about. Next year is always a possibility."

Simmons was one of three receivers inked by the Esks last week.

Scott Cloman, trimmed from the Washington Redskins roster, and Trevor Gaylor, ex of the Detroit Lions, remain in camp and continue to take reps during practice.

In addition to the trio of receivers, the Esks also signed running back Ron McLendon last week.

Defensive back Brad Franklin, a recent Seattle Seahawks castoff, arrived in town Tuesday and is also adjusting to life in a temporary locker.

All four players are currently on the Green and Gold's practice roster.

LATE HITS: Cornerback Darrel Crutchfield (knee) watched most of yesterday's practice, while running back Reggie White is suffering from flu-like symptoms and got the day off ... Non-import wide out Brock Ralph is walking without a limp and even chased down a few balls during yesterday's warm-up but is still doubtful for Saturday's game between the Esks and Toronto Argonauts. "It definitely feels better right now," said the sophomore receiver, who suffered a bruised left quad muscle during practice last Tuesday. "It's something we're still working on and I don't think any decisions (regarding Saturday) have been made yet."
