Calgary Stampeders' GM/head coach John Hufnagel says his team prepared for the salary cap increase by locking up key players, not by going on a spending spree.

Top-flight football coaches don’t grow on trees.

But John Hufnagel’s branches seem to be dropping them into the waiting arms of CFL franchises with regularity.

With three CFL clubs currently employing head coaches who worked directly under the Calgary Stampeders boss for multiple seasons, Hufnagel’s pipeline has become the one GMs around the league are most likely to tap into when looking for a fresh start.

“Back when I was growing up it was kind of the Bill Parcells pipeline and now you hear about the (Bill) Belichick pipeline and the (Nick) Saban pipeline and, I think, Huff is probably the guy up here who has the most guys who’ve had success,” said Stamps offensive co-ordinator/assistant head coach Dave Dickenson, who will someday add his own name to that list, whether it’s in Calgary or elsewhere. “I don’t know if those guys give Huff any credit but, I think, he deserves some, for sure.”
