John Hufnagel saw enough in Jeff Garcia to help develop him into a star quarterback on both sides of the border.

Does the Calgary Stampeders see a coach in his former pupil who has rejoined the CFL as an assistant with the Montreal Alouettes?

“I don’t see why not — there are a lot of ex-quarterbacks that become decent coaches,” said Hufnagel, before breaking into a sly grin.

Garcia, a standout for the Stampeders for four years before moving to the NFL and being a four-time Pro Bowler during 11 seasons, joined the Alouettes as an assistant coach Monday in the hopes of helping their moribund offence with quarterback Troy Smith at the helm.

“Football is in my blood — it’s what I know,” Garcia told the assembled media in Montreal on Tuesday. “It wasn’t easy leaving my wife and four children back home, and we’re hoping we made the right decision in doing this for me to really see if this is what I want to do as a living.”
