CALGARY - Ben D’Aguilar was not going to be caught off guard again.
The Calgary Stampeders defensive end had heard about the altitude issue when he showed up for his rookie season last spring.
But he had no idea how big of a physical drain it was.
“I thought I was going to give up after the warmup,” D’Aguilar said shaking his head.
“I remember I came in and then the same day, we had a (weight) lift. I went in to lift and I was seeing stars.
“I said ‘I gotta quit. I can’t even do the warmup, much less the two hours of practice we’ve got coming up next.”
The 24-year-old learned his lesson and prepared for it this time.
“I came out early and did a little hill-running,” the 6-foot-2, 236-pounder said.
“I got my conditioning under me so as not to be tired as hell.
“It was good to get acclimated, at least it was for me.”
