Juwan Simpson arrived in Calgary as a wide-eyed 23-year-old in the spring of 2008.

Six seasons, one Grey Cup win, 84 regular-season games and 294 tackles later, the Calgary Stampeders middle linebacker is a battle-tested veteran with a brand new contract in hand.

Now, he’s wondering when he’ll be able to reap the rewards of the two-year deal plus an option for a third season he signed back in January, as a labour dispute threatens the start of CFL training camps, slated for June 1.

But Simpson, who will turn 30 in July, is in a better position than most in that he hasn’t been playing for the league minimum for a few years now, and, thanks to a warning from the CFLPA last summer, he started setting aside money for a rainy, strike-induced day.
