Stampeders' Hufnagel not expecting to make splash

CALGARY - The only type of big splash John Hufnagel enjoys is an escape attempt by a largemouth bass.

Free-agent splashes just aren’t his thing.

When CFL free agency opens up Tuesday at 10 a.m., the Calgary Stampeders architect will likely be found perusing the bargain bins — you know, the marked-down special-teamers, undersized linemen and the non-import role players residing in between the high-priced stars eight other franchises will likely be checking into the moment the bell sounds.

That means fans hoping to see one of the big fish landing in Hufnagel’s boat — Montreal Alouettes offensive lineman Josh Bourke, Edmonton Eskimos defensive lineman Ted Laurent and Toronto Argonauts cornerback Patrick Watkins would be among that group — shouldn’t hold their breath. It’s just not Hufnagel’s modus operandi.
