CALGARY - As the Calgary Stampeders have found out this CFL season, there’s safety in numbers.

Heading into training camp this spring, Stamps defensive co-ordinator Rick Campbell was wondering how to find enough reps to keep everyone at the free-safety position sharp.

Four months later, they found a way.

But it wasn’t by design.

“All those guys that have been playing that spot are pretty sharp guys, so we, actually, were very fortunate to have good depth,” Campbell said Wednesday, after the Stamps persevered through a chilly practice session at McMahon Stadium. “Going into training camp, we were talking about how many safeties we had — five guys — and we were thinking, ‘How are we going to rep all these guys?’ We ended up having a few guys go down, so we’ve been rotating guys through.”

Three different players have made starts at safety, with an additional three bodies seeing significant time at the position, as well.
