CALGARY - John Hufnagel rarely allows himself to smell the roses.

The Calgary Stampeders GM/head coach is constantly searching for ways to improve his football team.

But after Friday’s 26-22 comeback win over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Huff took a puff.

“After the game, I had a little scotch and cigars,” said Hufnagel, who was celebrating his 62nd birthday as much as the victory.

He could also celebrate the fact his club locked up a CFL playoff spot on the weekend.

But, of course, that’s not his style.

He says his players are aware they’ve punched their ticket to the post-season, but he’s confident there will be no sense of complacency in the locker-room.

“They’re not going to ignore it,” Hufnagel said. “I think they have a good grasp of where they are at as a football team.

“We’re fortunate to have the record that we have, but we understand we need to get better."
