Jon Cornish didn’t hit 100 yards.

He didn’t find the endzone either.

But his value to the Calgary Stampeders offence was never more obvious than it was Friday night in Winnipeg.

Cornish churned out 88 tough yards along the ground against one of the best rushing defences in the league.

He added another 87 yards through the air, serving as a safety valve for first-time starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell.

Cornish says he’s happy to get an opportunity to catch a game-high six passes.

“Bo liked to check it down a little bit,” Cornish said with a big smile. “He put the ball in my hands, and good things happened.”

CFL fans might be surprised by what Mitchell was able to accomplish in his first start.

But Cornish wasn’t.

“He didn’t surprise anybody on our team,” Cornish said. “He’s a Texas quarterback, and Texas quarterbacks are raised at a young age to be relaxed in the pocket.
