The first impression?
Well, it wasn’t exactly a blew-them-away moment.
After Rob Maver suffered an injury in the Calgary Stampeders’ season-opener two years ago, Rene Paredes was one of four unemployed kickers invited to McMahon Stadium for an emergency audition.
“I remember I missed my first field goal,” Paredes recalled. “I thought it was over. It was a 20-yarder, I shanked it, and I’m like, ‘That’s it.’ But the calm guy I am, I stayed calm and started focusing and went on a streak.”
That streak helped him earn a job.
This one could earn him a spot in the CFL record books.
After nailing all five attempts last week in Montreal, Paredes has now been successful on 25 consecutive field-goal tries, a streak that dates back to Sept. 23, 2012.
