Without sneaking a peek at Shane Bergman’s bio, you’d be inclined to think the gargantuan offensive lineman was born and bred in Wild Rose Country.

Not so, though, the 6-foot-7, 352-lb. Calgary Stampeders rookie road grader from Teeterville, Ont., says.

“I fit right in (out west),” Bergman said, casting a shadow over everything in his path. “When I get some time, I’m gonna be going fishing. I’m gonna buy an Alberta fishing licence and I’ll be going, for sure — buy a pole and go.”

But he hasn’t had time just yet, as he’s been busy trying to lock down a job on the Stamps offensive line for the past two weeks after hearing his named called in the sixth round (48th overall) of last month’s CFL Draft.

He’s a long way from the small farming hamlet southwest of Hamilton, where Bergman spent his summers on the family farms growing ginseng, small grains and tobacco, and his first CFL training camp has been an eye-opener.
