Stamps bolster pass-catching depth
By SCOTT MITCHELL, QMI Agency
CALGARY - Drew Tate has four potential new targets.
Looking to bolster the pass-catching depth, the Calgary Stampeders inked Dominique Johnson, Marquay McDaniel, Maurice Price and Fred Rouse to contracts Tuesday.
Three of the players are no strangers to McMahon Stadium, as Rouse and McDaniel both spent time on the Stamps’ practice squad last season, while Price had a short stint with the Red & White in 2009.
McDaniel comes with the most CFL experience, as the 5-foot-10, 205 pounder started last season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where he was the Ticats nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie in 2009. In ’10, the 27-year-old had 76 catches for 998 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tabbies.
The 6-foot-1 Price, 26, spent 10 weeks on the Stamps practice roster in ’09, before touring various NFL camps the past two seasons.
Rouse was signed by the Stamps last fall but only lasted two weeks on the practice squad. The 6-foot-3 former top-recruit signed with the Florida State Seminoles out of high school in Tallahassee, starting the ’06 Orange Bowl for the ‘Noles but then transferred to Texas-El Paso, before finishing his college career at Concordia-Selma.
Johnson brings serious size to the position at 6-foot-3, 230 lb. The 23-year-old signed with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last summer, but he was released in August.
ACTION FOR ARGOS
The Toronto Argonauts signed CFL veteran Jarious Jackson to back up prized QB acquisition Ricky Ray Tuesday.
The 34-year-old was released Feb. 1 by the B.C. Lions after spending seven seasons on the left coast. Jackson attempted just 22 passes last year behind the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player, Travis Lulay.
BOMBERS ADD TO STAFF
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added two new defensive coaches to head coach Paul LaPolice’s staff Tuesday.
Will Plemons will coach the defensive line, while Chip Garber will lead the linebackers.
Garber spent the last two seasons as the Argonauts’ defensive co-ordinator.
