CALGARY - The mere mention of Father's Day brings a tear to Henry Burris' eye this year.

A little more than month ago, wife Nicole's father, Norman Hatton, passed away and it was a tough loss for the entire clan.

Burris was so close to his father-in-law, the Calgary Stampeders quarterback caused some confusion on Twitter when he wrote “RIP Dad.”

“Once Nicole’s mom passed away back in 2008, we spent so much more time with him,” Burris said, wiping away tears.

“We became almost like brothers, him and I. We did so many things together, and he taught me so many things. When I saw Mr. Hatton, I called him Dad.

“My Dad (Henry Burris Sr.) is still alive and well, and I’m thankful for that every day. But I’m grateful that Mr. Hatton and I became as close as we were.”

Training camp is a hectic time for all Stampeders players, so Burris is thankful for the help he’s received from friends right now.

With Nicole tying up loose ends back at her parent’s home, Burris’ two boys, Armand and Barron, are in Calgary with him but are being cared for by a variety of friends while he’s at practices and meetings.

The boys have spent some time at Ryan Thelwell’s house with his three kids, as well as being cared for at their usual dayhome.

On Sunday, Burris will get some time to spend with his sons after a morning practice.

Going through the loss this spring makes Burris appreciate his family even more.

“Being able to wake up every morning and to have two precious young boys to play with, it’s precious,” Burris said.

“Regardless of what you do outside the house, they know you as dad. That’s what is meaningful for me.

“What Father’s Day means to me is being able to spend time with family.”

If Burris could pick what he wanted for a Father’s Day gift, the answer is easy.

“Just time with the family,” he said. “Whenever you go through times like these, each and every opportunity you get to spend with loved ones, you understand those are the true gifts given to you.”
